Valentine’s Weekend

When  my husband and I were dating he lived in Saskatoon and I lived in Regina. Every other weekend I would drive up there and we’d go on a date. Being poor college students, we didn’t have a lot of money to spend on fancy dates. Our favourite date was to drive to Midtown Plaza, walk around and have lunch at Manchu Wok. It wasn’t fancy and it wasn’t much.  We hardly ever bought anything but it allowed us to spend time together, talk, and get to know each other (and learn how to use chopsticks).

Today we drove into Regina (long story for another post) and we met up with my parents at the mall to have lunch. Just like the old days, my husband and I had Manchu Wok, sat together (the kids ate with my parents) and talked. It was a very “on brand” way of us to celebrate Valentine’s Day - to recreate our old dates. And for me, I thought it was kinda romantic.

After we were done our lunch, we all walked around the mall. We didn’t buy anything but my parents gave my youngest a ride around on those fluffy riding toys. She zipped around for 10 minutes, nearly taking out her sister a couple time.

It wasn’t a normal way to visit family but these days you take what you can get!! Just like back in the day, sometimes you have to be creative. Especially when the driving force is to be able to see and spend time with your loved ones.
