Meant to Say
was something about last night. But when I hit Save, I must have actually hit Post. Whoops. Oh well. So last night....
Wait, back up. Thursday night after Abby went to sleep, I went to the new arena to help set up for the Big Sportsman Dinner (not actually called that). The law office was responsible for all the prises...door prizes, silent auction items and all the stuff for the live auction.
Friday came. And it was a hoot. First of all, the arena looks awesome. Very impressive. Worth every penny. The evening was awesome too. The live auction was hilarious! The auctioneer was a real auctioneer and pretty funny. First to go was a Ford truck - $60,000. A signed Rider jersey and ball for over $5000 (by my boss - he also got the diamond earrings and matching necklace). But the best one wasn't even originally part of the auction. You'll have to understand, the dinner committee was very attentive to the head table especially in the alcohol department. Needless to say, by the end of the night, the head table looked a little worse for wear. Brian Burke came up and offered a free game in his private box, a pre-game skate with the leafs, a trip to the lockeroom and maybe an autograph and then they'll fly you on their private charter to any game in the east. By the end of the explanation to the MC (the play by play guy for the Leafs), it turned into a pre-game skate with the leafs, time in the lockeroom with the leafs, autographs from any player, watching the game in Burke's private box, a period in the press box with the play by play guys, trip to anywhere the leafs are playing the next day and tickets to that game too. For four people. It took 20 minutes to explain and 5 minutes for some guy to pay $24,000. Oh, and we won a Sirius radio and Boombox in the silent auction.
So after all that was done it was time for Mr. Burke's speech. The rest of the speakers spoke at various times throughput the night. They saved Mr. Burke for last. And man was he wasted! It started off awkward then moved into funny then ended kinda weird. Someone asked if he thought Winnipeg should get an NHL team again. After 15 minutes of professing his love for Canadian hockey (didn't he coach the USA hockey team? Ok, he's dual let's move on) and his sentimentality over hockey in Canada. Now, I believe him, someone that drunk isn't going to lie, ramble on and on, but never lie. But it all ended well and we were home around 11:00. Not bad.
Abby didn't eat her supper and stayed up late. Sounds about right! Guess we all had a good night.
