I'm a TEACHER!
AHH! Actually, it's not that bad. One of my friends from church wants to learn to play piano. She wants to know how to read music and play chords. I hesitate to call myself a teacher because I don't really know what I'm doing. I'm going back to how I was taught, but I was nine and I don't really remember that far back. That's my biggest problem in learning other instruments. I'm not familiar in not knowing how to play. I don't remember not knowing how to play the piano so not knowing how to play the mandolin is really frustrating. I expect myself to just pick it up and know where all the notes are and how to strum and everything. Not that easy.
So tonight, I met with her at the school and I showed her the notes written on the page and how they correspond to the notes on the keyboard. Then I showed her how to find a chord. My way is so much easier than what I was taught. I was taught scales and key signatures. I told her: for a C Chord, find C, then go up 4 semitones to get the middle note, then go up 3 semitones to get the last note. It works with every Major chord! For minor chords, it's 3 and then 3. It's a short cut. But I did tell her to learn the C, D and G scales and chords. She picks it up really fast. I mentioned stuff like quarter notes and rests but that will come later. She just wants to be able to play along with good songs. Next week I think I'll tell her about the bass clef. Maybe I'll add more chords. I'll see what she wants to learn. I swore I brought my Christmas piano books here with me, but I can't find them. I guess I'll just use what I can.Wish us luck!
