The Heat of the Moment or How to Watch a Rider Game and Scare Your Kids
I'm not known for loud outbursts of emotion. I'm pretty reserved, even by Canadian standards. However, I realize how loud I can be when I watch a football game.
Mark was at a Kinsmen golf tournament all day (he listened to the game on the radio), so it was just just me and the girls. It was such a hot day so I thought I'd blow up the kiddie pool. Much to my disappointment, I discovered that the top two inflatable sections had leaks. So I hooked up the sprinkler instead. Abby was kind enough to remind me of the last time I attempted to hook it up and managed to spray myself. Abby ran through a few times and then Isabelle woke up. I gave her a bit of lunch and then took her out too. She thought the sprinkler was hilarious but I think she had more fun when Abby dragged the broken pool next to the sprinkler, put it upside down and tried to fill it up. It served as a slip and slide. Or more of a slip and splash for Isabelle. But they had a great time. We came inside just to see kickoff. Abby knows to cheer for the Riders* and it's cute to see her cheer. She'll make comments about catching the ball before it hits the ground. When Taj Smith caught the long touchdown I was so relieved that I just sat back in my chair. Abby looked at me and asked me why I was sad the man caught the ball. Then there was the last play of the game. It was tied, no time left and within field goal range. (And against Montreal) So out comes Milo. My heart is pounding. Riders call a time out. This is brutal!! The whole game has been back and forth. Up and down. Good and bad. I just want a resolution to it all and preferably a good one! So finally he gets set up and when the ball splits the uprights, I screamed, "IT'S GOOD!!!"** Then I saw it. That little yellow rectangle on the TV screen. FLAG. The girls were already nervous after my celebration but I think I actually scared them when I screamed, "NOOOOOO!!!!!!" I just heard the ref say, "roughing the passer" when the stadium (and me) erupted. I grabbed my phone and tweeted to Milo "I love you." I try not to tweet in the heat of the moment to avoid stuff like that but I think that it was fairly harmless. This morning there was a thank you tweet from him. We cool.
*Abby wanted to pretend we were on different teams. She said to me, "Mommy, I'll be green and you be red." "Oh no, I'm not red." "Just pretend!" "Nope, I'm not even pretending to be red." But give the girl credit for deciding she was green and making me be the red team.
**I immediatley texted it to Mark totally forgetting the huge delay between TV and radio. I might have ruined it for him but it did allow him to look like a smart-guy when he predicted the kick was good.
