A Queen’s Court
I work for a lawyer. A lot of my work is done in the Court of Queen’s Bench. It dawned on me that when Queen Elizabeth II dies, and Prince Charles assumes the throne, that it will have to change to King’s Bench. All our forms, all our paperwork, everything. And that’s just one part of what will have to change.
The thought occurred to me that this, more than anything would be the downfall of the monarchy. By ruling consistently for 67 years Queen Elizabeth II has provided the crown with the stability to generally overlook the need to modernize or give up the monarchy.
It’s a good thing for the Royal Family that for the foreseeable future that we’ll have kings. And if we can get past the pain of changing everything to His Majesty, they might be able to weather this storm too. Coming out of a constitutional crisis arising from the abdication of King Edward VIII and through the assassination of their cousins the Russian Royal Family and two World Wars and the gradual decline of the British Commonwealth it’s amazing that they’ve lasted as long as they have!!
I’ve never called myself a monarchist. But I do love the romance of it all. The history. And I really like that they have no actual powers in the government. Sure, the government has to ask her permission for a few things but it’s not like she’s going to say no. She just goes around cutting ribbons and receiving dignitaries. And to be perfectly honest, she does a damn good job of it. She’s a force and I respect her. Long live the Queen!
