The Sentinel

It’s been a good week for hawk sightings. Maybe it’s because it’s fall and the hawks are gearing up for their migration but I’ve never seen more hawks around.

I’ve been watching hawks for nearly 30 years now (wow, that sounds weird. I feel old) but seriously, I remember living on the edge of Weyburn staring out my window, watching the hawks fly by. Or riding on my bicycle trying to follow them. But there are three things I’ve never seen...eating something it’s caught, hearing it vocalize, and seeing a nest with eggs or hatchlings. That changed this week.

First I saw a hawk on a bale. Nothing out of the ordinary. Through the scope I could see it picking at something reddish/pink. That’s when I realized it was eating. Too cool. I couldn’t tell what it was. Maybe a mouse, maybe a gopher. But it was really cool watching it.

Then, this afternoon while I was taking the dog for a walk, I glanced up and saw her just sitting there.  This time I decided to take a video. The last time I watched a hawk on a power pole, it called as it flew away. I was determined to get it this time. And I was not disappointed.

Still haven’t seen a nest with eggs or hatching but I doubt that will ever happen. And you know what they say, two or of three ain’t bad.
