Update #3 or The Poop Scoop
Those still interested in the (seemingly) endless saga of Abby's bowels, you are in for a treat. We last left off on Sunday when Abby was still constipated. Later that night she woke up and started crying. We went in and sure enough, a poop that could break a window. On Monday, she still wasn't feeling good. I went to work but I got a call at 3:30 from the babysitter. I could hear Abby screaming in the background. So I left and went to pick her up. We headed straight to Pharmasave. The pharmacist gave us some lactulose to give her. Everything seemed to be working out. So to speak. No poop but lots (and LOTS) of gas. On Thursday, she started straining and trying to poop. Now I'm thinking that this has gone on too long. I called into work and told them I wasn't coming in. (They are so understanding there. They've all heard the saga of Abby's poop and are very sympathetic. Working with a bunch of moms will do that) I hate going to the doctor and I hate even more, going to the hospital. Not because I have some fear of doctors and hospitals it's just it seems that anytime I think I need to go, the problem clears up and I'm fine. Just wait a couple days and you'll be fine seems to be my motto. But I really couldn't take it any longer. So I pulled out the last batch of muffins that were baking in the oven and packed up Abby. Because it was right at lunch time, no one else was there. We saw a nurse pretty much right away and within half an hour, we saw a doctor. I was feeling kinda funny about the whole thing because Abby was having a great time in the waiting room playing with the toys and magazines. She was running around and laughing looking nothing like the sick patient who needed to see the doctor so urgently! I could also smell her. Pretty bad but I thought this was good. Then the doctor could she what kind of poop stains she was making. So the doctor calls us in. She must have had interns with her because there were three of four young girls with her in scrubs and she was explaining everything to them. So yeah, quite the crowd, the interns, the doctor and a nurse. The doctor got the suppository ready and I got Abby's diaper off. To reveal a big chunk of poop. Cheers broke out! The doctor took a quick look at Abby, felt her tummy and decided that I should keep going on the lactulose and threw the suppository away. (See...just wait and it'll work out!) I cleaned her up and away we went. I drove straight to the grocery store and bought fruit cups (which Abby loves) strawberries and a giant bottle of prune juice (goes down fine with a bit of apple juice). Abby fell asleep in the Jimmy. I guess after a big poop like that, she deserved it.
I, on the other hand, was just beginning my journey of sickness. I was getting a cold yesterday and am in the thick of it now. Exhaustion, sore throat, runny nose, achy, it's all there. I swear someone strapped an extra 50 lbs on both my legs today. Ug. No fun. So tonight after supper, I took a nap on the couch. Abby was nice enough to lend me her baby to help me sleep. My peaceful slumber was interrupted when I heard her (sitting at the table watching Bible Stories) trying to poop - and crying. But not screaming. And not for very long. She came over to me and took my hand but then decided her stories were more interesting so off she went. My nose is completely stuffed so I couldn't tell if she had actually pooped or not but when she went to visit Daddy, his reaction told me everything. Since it was time for bath, we got her ready and we were treated to a sticky, dark, yucky, need 10 wipes to see skin again poop. Hooray! And it did stink. Even I could tell.
Well that is an encouraging sign. We're going to continue with the lactulose because there is no problems with taking it for a long time. We're continuing with the prune juice and lots of fruit and hopefully everything will go back to how it is suppose to go.
What a weight off my mind. I don't know if I'm going to spend the rest of the evening with a stiff drink in the tub or with a bag of popcorn watching a new movie. Maybe I'll do both. Hmmm, both sounds nice.
P.S. Never leave muffins in the tray to cool off. They continue baking (but just the bottoms) and you're left with hard muffins with burnt bottoms. On the other hand, the tops are the best part anyway. Good thing I still have blueberries left over!
