A Discovery
Last night I took the dog out for her last walk of the day. I decided to take her out to the back for a change. The wind was blowing and the coyotes were howling. Not the most pleasant of evenings. It was also very dark because of the cloud cover. I had my flashlight with me so I could see where we were going.
We were walking around on the grass when all of the sudden, a bird flew up from right beside me!! Hera tried to go after it but she was on a leash. I looked down to where I was standing, and a just a couple feet away there was a small circle in the ground with three tiny eggs and one little puffball. The eggs were white with brown speckles all over them and they were about the size of the tip of my thumb, around 2 cm. I took Hera back inside, grabbed my phone, went back out and tried to find the nest again. It took about five minutes of searching and taking careful steps before the mother bird flew up again. After that I knew I was close and sure enough, I found the nest again. I took a short video and a couple pictures before leaving and letting Mama go back to her nest.
This morning I woke up and wanted to know if my discovery had any adverse affects on the nest. I had a better idea where the nest was in the light but it still took awhile to find it and I only did after the mother flew away.
This is what I found today. It looks like two little fluff balls now and two little tiny eggs.
It’s so cold and windy this morning I didn’t stay long. I don’t want the nest getting too cold and the mother thinking that she’s not safe. I’m going to leave them alone for the next couple days. If I can stay away!! I do my best not to stay very long and never touch them. It’s just so amazing to see.
I did a little research and I think they are a horned lark. Judging from their size and colouring, the size and colour of the eggs and the fact the nest in on the ground surrounded by grass pretty much lines up exactly with horned larks.
