I Might Be Losing My Mind

Or I just can’t count. But I have photographic evidence!! I’ll start from the beginning.

If you’re new here, here’s the whole story.

May 17: I’m walking my dog that evening when a bird flies up from right beside me. I look down and there’s a nest! One teeny tiny baby bird and three eggs.

For the next week, I watch the little guy grow bigger and bigger. But no other eggs hatch.

Until finally on Saturday, the little guy left the nest. However, when I checked the nest, there were only two eggs there. I figured, the chicks might have knocked one out on its way out of the nest. Or the mom threw it out. Who knows?

Then yesterday, I went to show the girls the nest. I figured it was pretty safe to go around there again since everyone has left. Imagine my surprise when there were now three eggs in the nest! Strange. But hey, maybe mom found the other egg and pushed it back into the nest. They are really tiny eggs, after all, I may have not seen it in the grass.

And now today. I was going to take down the marker that shows us where the nest is...so we don't run over it or accidentally step on it.  And what do I see?

Here's my theory. Another horned lark liked the nest so much that she decided to make it her own. Maybe my #nestwatch2019 isn't quite over yet!!
