Chick Check
It’s been raining for the last few days so I haven’t been able to check on my chicks for awhile. So I peeked in on them this morning. They’re growing fast.
According to the Audubon app, the chicks have another week and a half or so before they’ll leave the nest. And then maybe they’ll have another nest! I’ve read that they can have two or even three broods. I really hope she uses the same nest! I can’t remember a time when I’ve had such amazing access to watch the eggs hatch and the chicks grow!
One spring, many, many years ago, a robin built a nest in a bush in my backyard. Of course I was fascinated with it. I must have gotten too close because she abandoned the eggs and I never saw her again. My mom said that the robin built the nest too close to the ground, it was a short bush, so the robin might have got spooked by stray cats but I always felt guilty.
Maybe that’s why I’m so nervous about checking on my chicks. Mind you, it hasn’t really stopped me, has it? Maybe Mom was right.
I’ve named the chicks: Reggie, Ricky, Rose, and Ruth.
