Day One

I find myself swinging on this strange pendulum. I swing from “this really isn’t so bad, working from home is kinda neat and it’s not a big change” to “this is a terrible plague that will fundamentally shift the way we live and work from this day forward.” And “what are we even doing? I’m spreading it around every time I go to the store” to “hey, every little but helps and I’m only going out when necessary. We all have to do our part.”

Today was my first day working from home. On Friday I packed up my computer and all the supplies that I thought I would need and drive it all home. Sunday evening my husband and I starting hooking everything up. He looked at me and said that my computer only has one plug. I looked at him blankly. He started asking me all these questions about cords and plugs in and a bunch of different things. At one point I just gave up and said I don’t know! I go to work, I turn on my computer and I do my job. When I left I grabbed all the cords that were hooked into the devices. What do I know?

So he ended up downloading a new driver for the printer. We hooked up the computer to the modem with a cord and all is well. More or less. I spent the first nearly 2 hours working the bugs out of all my normal procedures. And there’s still one thing I can’t do. However I’ve found a work around. It’s not perfect but it will get the job done. And it will let me keep my job - which is important.

But it wasn’t a complete waste. I got some work done. I got some groceries. And I took the dog for a walk. We were walking down the driveway when I heard the most beautiful sound - a sound I haven’t heard in months. The song of a meadowlark. It’s somewhere in those trees.

It was such a nice day today. So warm. Everything is melting. I had to turn the air in the car to cold!

The girls spent quite awhile outside. Good thing too because tomorrow is supposed to be cooler and very windy. The girls also had their first day of home-school. My husband sat them both down and they created a schedule together. There’s time for reading, science, art, play, free-time and outside. There’s even an hour to spend with the dog. And just like with my day, there were some bugs but they were worked out with some problem solving.

I try to make my work station comfortable and fun. At work, I have a picture of my family and a nice picture on my desktop. Here, I realized that I don’t even have a window. So I made one for myself. Not too shabby.
