What’s So Good About It?

It’s Good Friday. And this year even more than others, we could ask why do we call it “good”? It’s the day we observe the brutal death of Jesus Christ. This year we can’t even observe the normal traditions. My daughter asked me this morning if it wasn’t for COVID-19, would we be at her grandparents’ house right now. And yes we would, we would be visiting both grandparents, the girls would be playing with a bunch of different cousins. The dogs would run around - okay, my dog would run around her cousin dog and he’d swipe at her until she finally settle down and he could nap again. The adults would be sitting around talking, making supper (probably ham, coleslaw, buns, maybe some sausages and cabbage rolls and plenty of desserts). Then we’d sit down to a big dinner and enjoy our tea after it’s all done. The girls would decorate their Easter eggs and in the morning they’d get up in the morning and search around for chocolate eggs. But that’s not happening this year.

But just like the first Good Friday, there is joy to be found. Jesus didn’t stay buried. He died for our sins but death could not hold him. COVID-19 keeps us apart but it can’t keep us down.

This morning we hard-boiled the eggs so the girls can decorate them. And I think they did a pretty good job!

Then this afternoon, to get them outside, I pulled out the kites that our neighbour gave us last year. It’s a decent day outside, not too warm but not freezing and just enough wind for flying a kite. So we gave that a go!
