Welcome Home

Everyday I am seeing more and more wildlife around my house. A couple small herds of deer (saw six of them this evening), flocks of geese, many of whom have paired off. Of course, there’s the mice and gophers. The other day I saw a great horned owl. The coyotes of course, have been around all winter. But today was the best... Hank is back!!

Hank is a northern harrier who has lived around our place for the last three years - at least. He sticks out because he is grey and he glides over the fields rather than soaring high up in the sky. I mean, he does that too but when he’s hunting he’s not that far off the ground. He’s got a mate too - Harriet. I haven’t seen her yet but since she’s brown, she looks like every other hawk in the sky.

I’ve always loved watching hawks. When I was younger, there were lots of hawks close to where I lived. I spend hours starring at the sky to watch them. They are beautiful and powerful and graceful and... they eat mice. Win!

I hope that pretty soon I get to see some smaller hawks take to the skies and try out their wings. Once, when we lived up north, a bald eagle was flying over the water with two juveniles. It was really cool to see them learning to soar. I hope I get to see that again.
