I’m Not a Lush, Honestly

But I do like a good drink. And I like to try new things.

Every New Year’s Eve, like clockwork, I manage to convince myself that I like champagne. Or at least I dislike it less than I think I do. And every New Year’s Eve, when I pop the top, pour myself a glass and make a toast, it all comes crashing back. Maybe it’s fact I don’t want to spend $100 on a bottle that I may or may not like (probably not like). So I buy the cheaper stuff. Maybe one year I’ll learn. I’ll just have to wait and see.

I like making my own cocktails. So far, my favourite is the gimlet, because I am, on the inside, an 80 year old British woman. It’s basically gin and lime juice and a bit of simple syrup. It was created for British sailers so they wouldn’t get scurvy. And because no one (except me) would actually eat an actual lime, they mixed them with gin. Boom. Life-saving.

While we were in Mexico, I also had the opportunity to try a few new drinks, zombie, tequila sunrise among others. But the winner by far, was the classic margarita. Probably because of my obsession with limes - but who knows.

I also like whisky. A properly mixed old fashioned is quite good and if you mix lemonade with blackberry whisky, it tastes like summer in a glass.

As for wine, I enjoy a nice cold glass of moscato. I still haven’t found a type of red that I really like. I’ve kinda settled for Shiraz but I’m not sold.

My husband likes beer - craft beer in particular. I am not a fan so I don’t have too much to say about that. I’d like to like beer. I like the idea of a cold beer on your deck after a long summer day. But I’d have to settle for a hard cider or lemonade. Or maybe a margarita.
