Nerves of Ice

Well, not really. It was A’s first day of Youth Curling. She’s done the little kids curling before but now she’s graduated to the older class. Which means she one of the smallest and youngest out there. A has never been all that great with new experiences. But she really likes curling and it’s such a great activity so we’re pushing her to do it. She was so excited to start until she saw all the older kids. Then she deflated like a balloon.

She was out in a team with four boys about a year older than her. When I looked up and her and caught her eye, two big tears rolled down her cheeks. But to her credit, she soldiered on. When it was all over, she was happy and ready to go next week. I call that a win!

It’s tough to know when to push and when to hold. And how are you supposed to be able to deal with new experiences when you never have any new experiences? And I will admit, she is doing much better when she’s thrust into a new environment. It’s amazing to see her grow.
