Fishy Weeds
Today we went fishing. We hadn't gone in awhile so we were itching to go. It started slow. All we caught were weeds. Well, all I caught was weeds. Mark caught two Jack right away. He even caught a jack with weeds attached. It was getting a little annoying. We were getting snags all over the place. I caught a really big snag. I couldn't get it off. Mark kept saying that it was a fish, but it wasn't;t moving so it had to be a snag. I tried and tried but I couldn't get it loose. I couldn't even snap the line. So I asked Mark for help. He said that it was a fish, but again, no movement. So he pulls and he pulls and the top half of the pole falls off into the water. Now this is bad. The only way to get the top half of my pole back is to reel the line in and have some kind of object at the end to bring it together, like a hook. Now for sure we can't break the line but at this point it's the only way I can get any of my pole back. When all of the sudden, a fish covered in weeds emerges from the water. I grabbed the top half of the pole and stuck it back on the rest and Mark finished pulling in the fish. Was that ever lucky. If it had just been a snag and my line broke...no more pole for Emily.
We fished around some more. We caught a lot of jacks but no sign of pickerel. We went past a rock island with at least 8 pelicans on it. Then in one bay, a bald eagle was sitting in the tallest branch of the tallest tree on the island. It looked so majestic. Like "I am the greatest predator here. I am the greatest. See me look down on you". Very arrogant when you think about it. I caught a jack and Mark bopped him on the head to give to the eagle. But I don't think he bopped him enough cuz he never floated to the top. Boy those fish are resilient. One time Mark squeezed a jack so hard (to get the hook out) that blood was coming out of its gills. I've done it too, and I poked out an eye once. We've held them out of the water so long pulling hooks out that we thought they would have died for sure. Well, today nothing died because of us. I guess that's good for them and bad for us. When we were putting the boat on the truck to head home two guys and a teenager came and were asking us about the fishing here. They thought they were on a different lake at first. They asked what kind of fish, where and if there were lots of rocks. We told them that we didn't really know, we've only been here twice. And that we didn't see any pickerel but lots of jack and that if you go straight across the lake, that's where the fishing is. They seemed concerned that they had to boat so far. We told them it takes about 15 minutes on our boat, but they weren't impressed. They heard about some bridge on some lake that you can fish off of and catch good fish there, did we know where? Well, Mark had heard about it but had never been. So they decided to drive around and see if they could find it. Good luck. Do you know how many bridges there are around here? And they didn't even know the exact name of the lake. They must have thought we were trying to keep a secret about this lake, but we honestly couldn't answer their questions. Naosap is a big lake and you can't see where the holes are to point them out. You actually have to boat across the lake to see. I don't know why they were so reluctant to go, they had a big boat with a 118 horsepower motor. They'd have gotten there in no time. We were trying to figure out where these guys came from. Obviously not from here. The one guy had a Grey Cup hat on with the logo from when the cup was in Regina. It looked used so he must have gotten it then and worn it since then. But the other guy was wearing a Tommy Hilfiger T-shirt. I don't know any guys who wear that brand, especially to go fishing. Well, anyway, they took off and we went home. I had a coupon for the local pizza place here so I ordered a couple pizzas and we watched a movie. A nice day all around...except no fish.
