A key in the hand is worth two in the house
When we moved in, we were concerned about the front door. It didn't seem to lock if you shut it all the way. But the contractor said oh no, you are not supposed to shut it that far. Just close it and then it will lock. Mark was skeptical but it did seem to work. And since we don't usually use the front door, there was no problem. Yeah, right.
We went to get groceries today. Nothing out of the ordinary. When we got back Mark said to go through the front door and he'd pass the groceries up. So I took a few bags and my purse and his keys to open the door. So I got everything in and Deeds was running around so I dropped everything, closed the door and went to get more groceries. When I get back, the door is locked. We started freaking out because not only did I lock Mark's keys in the house but I also locked my keys which were in my purse. So now we have two locked doors and two keys inside the locked doors. By the way, the door should not have locked. I unlocked the door and did not relock the door. The door was not installed properly. This way the deadbolt locks but not the handle lock. If you shut the door the way you are supposed to, the deadbolt won't lock, but the handle lock will. So when we had left the house, the deadbolt was locked and the handle was locked but not in use and therefore was not unlocked when I open the door. So we I shut the door and used the proper force to shut the door, I locked it. It's confusing but I finally understand. So where was I? Oh yeah, outside. So we're waling around outside trying to figure out what to do. I try some of the windows and one opens. I crawl through the window of the office and unlock the doors. Mark takes his keys back and tells me I'm not to use them again if I have a pair myself. Okay, I deserve that. But really, if the door had been installed correctly, we would have this problem. So everything is fine now. We got inside and we learned a valuable lesson: always keep a key outside the house just in case. So we hid one where no one will ever find it, except us.
